You see these statistics? 5 out of 50 states don't even have laws against any type of hate crimes. In 13 states, they have some type of laws against hate crimes, but they do not include sexual orientation harassment as a hate crime. In Virginia, they have hate crime laws, but none based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Discrimination and hate of people who have a different sexual orientation or gender identity have been growing over the years. "A Ugandan newspaper ran an anti-gay diatribe with [David Kato's] picture on the front page under a banner urging, 'Hang Them.'" In Uganda, anti-gay discrimination is so bad that the government is planning on making laws that execute gay people. When the police found his body they said it was robbery, but some of his neighbors think it as a hate crime. "'David's death is a result of the hatred planted in Uganda by U.S. evangelicals in 2009,' Val Kalende, the chairwoman of one of Uganda's gay rights groups, said in a statement. 'The Ugandan government and the so-called U.S. evangelicals must take responsibility for David's blood.'" (Gettleman)
